X-server problem vid start (fatal server error)

Hej.

Situationen är som följande:
Jag har kört Linux Slackware 11.0 i två veckor utan några problem med X server. Jag har även en Windows-partition på hda, som jag använder ibland.
Nu var jag inne i Windows en stund, för att sedan reboota med Linux, inga problem där förutom att jag alltid måste köra netconfig varje gång jag byter ifrån Windows till Linux. Sedan när jag hade konfigurerat nätverket för kanske 5:e gången på dessa två veckor, och skrev startx som 'user', fick jag följande:

Fatal server error: Cannot move old log file("/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old")

giving up

När jag sedan lyckas att i root skapa en ny användare, och försöka starta x med den nya användaren får jag följande:

Jag har lyckats logga in på båda kontona ifrån init 4, men det jag vill veta är vad mitt problem i init 5 beror på och vad jag kan göra för att det inte skall hända igen?
Det fungerar förövrigt bra att logga in som root.

Hm, kan det ha blivit något strul med skrivrättigheterna för /var/log/Xorg.0.log och /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old ?

Jag skulle prova att som root göra

mv /var/log/Xorg.0.log /var/log/Xorg.0.log_backup
mv /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old /var/log/Xorg.0.log_backup

Fungerar det i Runlevel 3?
Runlevel 5 används inte i Slackware utan är konfigurerad som Runlevel 3

Känns som det är problem med permissions som stökar.

Att den inte kan flytta loggen är med största sannolikhet pga att din användare inte har skrivrättigheter till filen i fråga.

Varför du inte kan starta X har jag själv aldrig forskat djupare i... Jag kör antingen startx som root eller byter runlevel till 4 om jag ska in i X.

Jag funderar också på om det har något med skrivrättigheter att göra, men mig veterligen har jag aldrig använt mig av chmod eller chown på /var. Jag skall dock försöka mig på 'chmod 777 -R' i /var/log och återkomma med resultat.

Om runlevel 3 är den som är default vid start så har jag prövat det redan, men jag skall försöka med 'init 3' så får vi se vad som händer.

Trappski: Du har alltså samma problem, och använder dig av runlevel 4, eller misstolkar jag dig? Vad är det som gör att runlevel 4 fungerar, allt jag vet är att den är multiuser?

Jag tror att du ska se upp med att göra hela /var/log +rwx för alla användare, säkerhetsrisken är kanske inte enorm - men det känns kanske säkrare att först testa mitt tips.

Init 3 är default runlevel också multi-user...
Om du planerar att köra X oftast så är det kanske smidigare att byta till runlevel 4 som default i /etc/inittab
Så brukar jag göra då jag konfigurerat klart allt bytt kernel och sett till så att X fungerar som det ska...

4 är X11 med GDM/KDM/XDM dvs någon form av sessions-hanterare.
Man kan väl säga att jag har samma problem ja... Även om jag inte riktigt tänkt på det som ett problem som sagt.

standardpermission för Xorg.0.log och Xorg.0.log.old är satta så att enbart ägaren har skrivrättigheter... restrerande har läsrättigheter.
Sitter inte i Linux nu annars hade jag kunnat kontrollera om det faktiskt ger mig samma resultat...

Nu har jag gjort det Kristian tipsade om samt satt chmod 777 på log-filerna.

Då fick jag följande meddelande:

Jag satte då chmod 777 på /dev/tty0, och försökte starta X igen. Då fick jag följande:

"Fatal server error:

xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)

X10: fatal IO error 104 (ceonnection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining."

Jag prövade att gå "init 3", men shell gav ingen indikation på att byta runlevel, så jag antar att det är default.

Trappski: Om det fungerar felfritt med runlevel 4 så finns det ju egentligen inget problem, det jag mest är kluven över är hur det kommer sig att detta uppstår plötsligt efter två veckors användande.

Loggarna sköts av logrotate och cron. Så undvik att ändra, annat än i /etc/logrotate.conf.
Likaledes ändra inte permissions.
